Description
Lute is a wallet for the Algorand blockchain. It can be built and published as a progressive web app (PWA), or a browser extension. Lute has broad adoption across the ecosystem (TinyMan, Folks Finance, NFD, GoPlausable, Lora, and xGov to name a few) thanks in part to its inclusion in the use-wallet library, and in part to passionate users demanding it as an option. Unlike other wallets in the ecosystem, Lute does not use WalletConnect as a bridge and so it is not subject to the expired sessions issues that plague WC-based wallets. Lute’s automatic network switching and KMD support make it favorite among developers and with a long list of other features, there are plenty of reasons to love Lute.
Lute supports:
• Ledger hardware wallets
• HD wallets
• Multi-Sig accounts
• Custom Networks
• Asset Inbox
• NFD and Vaults
• Data Signing
• Atomic Swap (peer to peer)
• Falcon accounts (post-quantum, experimental)
You can find the web version of Lute at https://lute.app where you will also find a link to install the browser extension.
About the team
Andrew Funk (@funk on Discord and here, @LuteWallet on X, @StopThinking on reddit) is an active builder of public goods in the Algorand ecosystem. In addition to Lute Wallet he has built FUNC and AlgoTools.
Additional Info
Lute has been under constant development since its inception in January 2024. Beyond the development of the code, the majority of the work in making Lute a success was in getting integrations/adoption. Lute is now a trusted part of the Algorand ecosystem and that is no small feat.
The next step in building trust is to open the source for Lute. Lute was developed closed-source for a couple reasons. One, as mentioned above much of the work is getting adoption and I didn’t want competition from a fork of my own code while I was working on that. And two, I wanted to keep my options open for funding - either though a grant proposal like this, or a sale of the product.
Lute is requesting a retroactive grant of 400K Algo. If this proposal passes, the source code to build both the PWA site and the browser extension will be opened prior to funding. Lute has received no prior funding.
Metrics
Lute respects user’s privacy and the web version implements minimal tracking (referrer only), so while total number of users is difficult to determine, here are some metrics that are helpful.
Web: 76 distinct referral sources (integrated dApps)
Extension: 2032 users
